Make Your Interview Stories Work for You

"We felt he's not able to push back. That he'll struggle when it comes to influencing executives, and this will result in not delivering on time."
A candidate was disqualified because of the stories he chose to tell.
Often during interviews candidates start a story, set the scene, describe the headwinds… and then forget to end it. The conversation leads elsewhere or they simply move on.
It's great to tell a story about a hard moment. Everyone loves humility, and pushing through roadblocks is what makes executives shine. Just make sure to tie it up in a bow. Talk about how you influenced and made an impact, or if you didn't, the clear lesson and what you'd do differently next time. If you're going to share a story, make sure you're the hero.
I prep candidates to have their toolbox of stories ready, because they will hear "Tell me about a time when…"
Imagine the interviewer is going to tell the rest of the hiring team about you. Give them awesome stories. The stories you share will be what people remember about you.
